The Houston Schiller Chorus is a growing choral ensemble. Our chorus is conducted by Maestro Dorceal Duckens. Mr. Duckens is a classically trained bass/baritone who studied Bel canto musical technique under Dr. Robert Henry at Prairie View A & M. He is a founding member of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild along with Dr. Henry.
Our chorus repertoire is dedicated to the great composers of classical European composition and the American Negro Spiritual. Our chorus has performed the great works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Brahms, along with great classical composers of the spirituals, including Hall Johnson, William Dawson and many more.
We have been invited to sing at community events and festivals, including yearly Christmas performances. Every year the chorus hosts a Schiller Celebration in honor of the great Poet of Freedom Friedrich Schiller, where we present music, poetry, and drama. We also invite guests who present classical music and art from other cultures.
Our chorus sings at the Verdi tuning of C=256 Hz. We rehearse every Tuesday evening. There are no auditions required to join our chorus, just those who are willing to learn and who love making beautiful music. If you are interested in joining or finding out more about our chorus, please call us at 713-830-9049.
