{"id":73039,"date":"2021-04-21T18:04:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T22:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schillerinstitute.com\/?p=73039"},"modified":"2021-04-21T18:04:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T22:04:36","slug":"mexicos-amb-to-un-denounces-worlds-indifference-to-the-specter-of-hunger-haunting-the-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schillerinstitute.com\/es\/blog\/2021\/04\/21\/mexicos-amb-to-un-denounces-worlds-indifference-to-the-specter-of-hunger-haunting-the-planet\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico\u2019s Amb. to UN Denounces World\u2019s \u201cIndifference\u201d to the \u201cSpecter of Hunger\u201d Haunting the Planet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mexico\u2019s Ambassador to UN Denounces the World\u2019s \u201cIndifference\u201d to the \u201cSpecter of Hunger\u201d Which Haunts the Planet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">April 20, 2021 (EIRNS) \u2013 Juan Ram\u00f3n de la Fuente, Mexico\u2019s Ambassador to the United Nations, published an op-ed in the April 19 edition of El Universal under the headline \u00abThe Specter of Hunger Haunts the Planet,\u00bb in which he denounces the \u00abindifference\u00bb of most people to this gravest of problems, which he suggests should be considered a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blaming the rise of hunger on wars, the pandemic, and climate change, De la Fuente cites the president of the World Food Program, David Beasley, to the effect that \u00abif you don\u2019t feed people, you will be feeding conflicts.\u00bb He notes that the \u00abspecter of hunger is again haunting the planet in at least 30 countries,\u00bb and adds: \u00abIt is obvious that far greater resources are needed than are available, but so long as we don\u2019t admit that hunger is the main motive for the disorderly and irregular migration which occurs in our region, from south to north, I greatly fear that the containment measures that may be adopted will continue to be insufficient\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De la Fuente adds: \u00abI don\u2019t know what is more alarming: the magnitude of the suffering which hunger causes in the world today, or the indifference with which those of us who don\u2019t go hungry react to it\u2026 [Hunger] is something that is happening in real time in many places. If deliberately denying people access to food constitutes a crime against humanity, the simple idea of children dying of hunger anywhere should, at the least, weigh heavily on our conscience. The numbers available in the reports I have mentioned lead me to conclude that no, we are not dealing with a specter.
