Seit Ihrer ersten Reise nach Japan und Ihrem Hirtenbrief \u201eLeben im Licht des Friedens Christi: ein Dialog f\u00fcr die nukleare Abr\u00fcstung\u201c sind Sie in der katholischen Kirche und in den gesamten USA zu einer f\u00fchrenden Stimme f\u00fcr die Abschaffung von Atomwaffen geworden. Durch die Gr\u00fcndung der \u201ePartnerschaft f\u00fcr eine Welt ohne Atomwaffen\u201c haben Sie diese Reichweite noch weiter ausgebaut. Wir freuen uns sehr, da\u00df Sie diese Auszeichnung in den kommenden Monaten entgegennehmen werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wie Sie wissen, w\u00e4chst die Gefahr eines Atomkriegs offenbar von Tag zu Tag, obwohl hundert Staaten den Atomwaffenverbotsvertrag (TPNW) unterzeichnet haben \u2013 75 haben ihn sogar ratifiziert. Die diesj\u00e4hrige TPNW-\u00dcberpr\u00fcfungskonferenz war erneut eine Entt\u00e4uschung. Man lie\u00df den New-START-Vertrag auslaufen. Ru\u00dfland, die USA und Israel, allesamt Atomwaffenstaaten, befinden sich im Krieg. Finnlands Pr\u00e4sident hat k\u00fcrzlich ein Gesetz unterzeichnet, das Einfuhr und Transit von Atomwaffen erlaubt. Und litauische Politiker haben sich dem Vernehmen nach darauf geeinigt, ihre Verfassung zu \u00e4ndern, um Litauen k\u00fcnftig die Stationierung von Atomwaffen zu erm\u00f6glichen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kurz gesagt, wir n\u00e4hern uns einem Atomkrieg so stark wie damals w\u00e4hrend der Kubakrise 1962. Diese Krise endete mit diplomatischen Bem\u00fchungen, die die Welt retteten, und Papst Johannes XXIII. spielte dabei eine Schl\u00fcsselrolle. Seine einflu\u00dfreiche Rolle ist wenig bekannt, aber er war es, der sich zu Wort meldete, um den notwendigen moralischen Ton anzugeben, der beiden Seiten half, sich f\u00fcr den Frieden einzusetzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So entwickelte sich die Lage: Im Herbst 1962 lud der Journalist Norman Cousins in Andover\/Massachusetts zu einer informellen Diskussionsrunde sowjetischer und amerikanischer Wissenschaftler. Eine F\u00fcgung des Schicksals wollte es, da\u00df sie sich am&nbsp;<strong><em>22. Oktober<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;trafen, an dem Abend, an dem Kennedy die Nation \u00fcber die sowjetische Atomraketenbedrohung in Kuba informierte und die Marine anwies, weitere Lieferungen dorthin abzufangen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zu den von Cousins Eingeladenen geh\u00f6rte auch ein Berater von Papst Johannes XXIII. im Vatikan, Pater Felix Morlion. Er fragte, ob eine p\u00e4pstliche Intervention dazu beitragen k\u00f6nne, die Lage zu entsch\u00e4rfen. Cousins rief im Wei\u00dfen Haus an; ein sowjetisches Mitglied der informellen Gruppe telefonierte mit Moskau. Beide erhielten ein&nbsp;<em>nihil obstat<\/em>. Pater Morlion informierte den Vatikan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Am&nbsp;<strong><em>25. Oktober<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;sendete&nbsp;<em>Radio Vatikan<\/em>&nbsp;einen eindringlichen Friedensappell von Papst Johannes an die Staatschefs der Welt, insbesondere an Kennedy und Chruschtschow. Darin hie\u00df es unter anderem:&nbsp;<em>\u201eDie Hand aufs Herz f\u00fcr das Gewissen gelegt, m\u00f6ge jeder den verzweifelten Schrei h\u00f6ren, der aus allen Teilen der Erde zum Himmel emporsteigt: Frieden, Frieden!\u201c<\/em>&nbsp;Wir erneuern diesen feierlichen Appell heute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die&nbsp;<em>Prawda<\/em>&nbsp;druckte die Botschaft des Papstes umgehend mit einer gro\u00dfen Schlagzeile ab. Und am&nbsp;<strong><em>28. Oktober<\/em><\/strong>, als Chruschtschow den Abzug der Raketen aus Kuba ank\u00fcndigte, druckte die&nbsp;<em>Prawda<\/em>&nbsp;die Botschaft des Papstes erneut ab und lobte dessen \u201eRealismus in der Friedensfrage\u201c. Im Gegenzug zogen die Vereinigten Staaten ihre Raketen aus der T\u00fcrkei ab. Hunderte Millionen Menschen atmeten erleichtert auf, und Verhandlungen zwischen den USA und der UdSSR f\u00fchrten 1963 zum ersten Atomteststopp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ein Jahrzehnt sp\u00e4ter erz\u00e4hlte Chruschtschow Cousins, wie sehr er Papst Johannes bewunderte, und sagte:&nbsp;<em>\u201eW\u00e4hrend jener Woche der Kubakrise war der Appell des Papstes ein wahrer Lichtstrahl. Ich war daf\u00fcr dankbar.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Einige Jahre sp\u00e4ter sagte Chruschtschows Sohn Sergej, die Worte von Papst Johannes XXIII. h\u00e4tten das Gewissen der Menschen und ganz besonders das seines Vaters und Kennedys, stark beeinflu\u00dft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vor diesem Hintergrund dachten wir, da\u00df es vielleicht an der Zeit w\u00e4re, da\u00df heute etwas \u00e4hnliches geschieht. K\u00f6nnte Papst Leo XIV. eine Friedenskonferenz einberufen, um Atomwaffen von der russischen Grenze abzuziehen und die weltweite Abschaffung von Atomwaffen zu fordern?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Er hat bereits zum 80. Jahrestag der Atombombenabw\u00fcrfe auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki etwas in dieser Richtung angedeutet, als er betete, da\u00df die Bombenabw\u00fcrfe \u201eals Aufruf an die internationale Gemeinschaft dienen m\u00f6gen, ihr Engagement f\u00fcr die Schaffung eines dauerhaften Friedens f\u00fcr unsere gesamte Menschheitsfamilie zu erneuern \u2013 \u201aeinen Frieden, der unbewaffnet ist und zur Abr\u00fcstung f\u00fchrt\u2018\u201c. Vielleicht k\u00f6nnte der Vatikan oder ein anderer neutraler Ort wie Wien oder Genf als Veranstaltungsort dienen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>K\u00f6nnen Sie dabei helfen, diese Empfehlung an Papst Leo weiterzuleiten? Wir glauben, da\u00df Sie als starker und hochangesehener Verfechter der Abschaffung von Atomwaffen der ideale Diplomat w\u00e4ren, um Papst Leo zu ermutigen, Putin, Trump und Xi Jinping an einen Tisch zu bringen, um ein Ende der Atomwaffen zu planen und einen neuen Weg der wirtschaftlichen Umstellung von einer Kriegswirtschaft hin zu wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung f\u00fcr alle Menschen \u00fcberall zu ebnen.
